Pedro's Pupusa: A Colorful Journey for Migrant Children

As the writer of Pedro’s Pupusa, I find this series deeply personal. My parents migrated from El Salvador in the 1970s. I grew up living the first-generation experience—navigating two cultures, carrying the weight of my family’s hopes, and finding my voice in a world that often didn’t understand where I came from. These books are my way of honoring that journey.

Through Pedro’s eyes, I bring to life the joy, confusion, bravery, and love that so many migrant children carry with them each day. His friendship with a magical pupusa is not just a playful twist—it’s a tribute to the warmth of our culture, the comfort of our traditions, and the strength of imagination that helped me feel safe and seen as a child.

It was important for me to create stories that reflect the real experiences of kids like Pedro while also making space for wonder, laughter, and adventure. These books are not just about being a migrant—they're about being a kid, finding magic in everyday life, and celebrating where we come from.

I hope young readers see themselves in Pedro’s story and that others better understand the rich, diverse world that makes up the migrant experience in the USA. Most of all, I hope these stories remind every child—whether they’ve crossed borders or not—that their voice matters and their story is worth telling.
